NIAC announces that they have developed a new software application called SeRA, which stands for ‘Survey electronic Reporting Application’

TORONTO – Nuclear insurance pools like NIAC, provide the high quality insurance required by Canadian operators, which in turn gives peace of mind to the Canadian public.  In addition to secure capacity, a well-administered pool provides comprehensive risk control surveys.

Nuclear Insurance Association of Canada (NIAC) General Manager Colleen De Merchant explained, “A major activity of NIAC’s Centre of Excellence in Nuclear Risk Assessment is conducting independent risk control surveys at Canadian nuclear facilities. These facilities are reviewed regularly against the pool’s international guidelines.  A team of NIAC engineers and specialists, as well as experts from the international nuclear insurance pools conduct the surveys, which range from 2 to 4 days in duration.”

For this reason, NIAC has developed a new software application called SeRA, which stands for ‘Survey electronic Reporting Application’.

There are many benefits to automating our survey process:

  • Information about a facility, including history, resides in one place
  • The nuclear power plant continues to receive complete and accurate information in a timely fashion, facilitating their corrective action program
  • Visiting Surveyors can electronically integrate with the NIAC survey tool
  • Pool Managers and Insurers receive timely information tailored to their needs, giving them a better understanding of the risk

SeRA allows for observations and recommendations to be easily entered into a database, from which a report can be generated automatically. NIAC anticipates a productivity improvement with a significant reduction in report writing.

Beyond the time savings in report writing, having the data in the SeRA database opens up a multitude of possibilities:

  • The nuclear power station can receive tailored reports in a timely manner following the survey
  • Reports assist Insurers to make sound underwriting decisions
  • Information from previous surveys is readily available as a starting point for a new survey report
  • Statistics and benchmarks can be generated as data now collected in the SeRA database
  • The SeRA application is robust and provides the International Pools with secure information they need, including language features
  • Underwriters and Engineers can collaborate in real time and provide input and suggestions for future surveys
