Physics-based earthquake forecasting: Past, present and future

November 10, 2010   by Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR)

The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction is pleased to invite you to participate in a workshop with Kristy Tiampo, NSERC and Benfield/ICLR Industrial Research Chair in Earthquake Hazard Assessment based at The University of Western Ontario.

About ten years ago, two new approaches to the study of seismicity ushered in a new way of looking at earthquake hazard. Previously, seismic hazard studies were limited to producing probabilities of events over long time periods. Today, using a combination of detailed studies of small-scale seismicity and the evolution of stress patterns, it is possible to develop time-dependent hazard maps that provide information on increased earthquake risk over shorter time periods. Dr. Tiampo will discuss what has been learned in the intervening time period about these methodologies and how they can be integrated into existing probabilistic seismic hazard analyses. ICLR seeks to strengthen the insurance community’s awareness of the risks associated with natural hazards.

Each month we will host an informal discussion of current research and industry issues related to natural hazards. Member companies can send two participants at no cost. A fee of $75.00 will apply for additional attendees. The cost for non-members is $150.00 per person for each forum. Business casual dress.

Where: ICLR, 20 Richmond Street East, Suite 210

When: November 26, 2010; 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

RSVP: Tracy Waddington (twaddington@iclr.org)
