AIG verifies break-in

American International Group Inc. recently confirmed that on March 31 the company suffered a break-in during which computer equipment containing personal information on approximately 930,000 individuals was stolen from a Medical Excess L.L.C. unit office in Midwest US.
The data is a compilation of personal information delivered by 690 brokers. Some of the files even included Social Security numbers and names, according to AIG.
According to AIG the medical unit was quick to contact police and initiate its own internal investigation. “The server, which was locked in a room inside a locked regional office, was password-protected. There is no indication that the thieves were seeking data rather valuable hardware.”
AIG has not disclosed the site of the burglary. The Company says the reason for non-disclosure is that it does not want the thief to become aware of the significant value of the information.”
