The Alberta Automobile Association (AAA) is encouraging consumers to check their insurance policies for roof damage coverage, now that warmer temperatures in the province are melting snow on roofs, creating issues with ice damming.
“Ensure ice buildup is removed from the lower edge of your roof and your eavestroughs to reduce the risk of ice damming,” The AAA warns. “Ice dams form when melting snow runs down the roof, meets this mass of ice and backs up, sometimes getting under the shingles and into the rest of the house.”
The Red Deer Advocate cites a source from Cooper Roofing. The roofing business says it is taking between 15 and 20 calls a day from homes and business with roof issues related to melting snow and ice.
“Most homeowner insurance policies do include coverage for structural damage, said Norine Parker, regional claims manager with AMA Insurance. “However, every insurance company and policy can have different coverage levels and limits, so we strongly encourage homeowners to contact their insurance provider if they have questions or concerns about their insurance coverage.”
