Glen Frederick, director of client services for the Government of British Columbia, received the Donald M. Stuart Memorial Award during the 2011 Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) Canada Annual Conference in Ottawa on Sept. 19.
The Donald M. Stuart Award acknowledges Canadians who have made outstanding contributions in the field of risk management. The Ontario chapter of RIMS has presented the award annually since 1979.
During the award presentation, ORIMS chairman Roman Parzei outlined several achievements over the course of Frederick’s career, which has spanned more than 25 years. They included the successful implementation of an ERM program within the B.C. provincial government that is estimated to have saved the province $1 billion over the past seven years.
“Glen and his team were responsible for the successful application of an ERM strategy to manage the province’s risk arising out of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games,” Parzei said. “In addition, Glen provided risk management expertise to the Vancouver organizing committee and to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
“So successful was this ERM initiative that the IOC now requires all future Olympic games to implement an ERM strategy utilizing a similar methodology used by the B.C. province.”
Upon accepting the award, Frederick said he was overwhelmed by the recognition.
“I’m incredibly honoured,” he said. “Don Stuart was a true pioneer in risk management and to have my name linked to his through this award is a bit overwhelming.
“It’s a little humourous that you’re giving me an award for promoting risk management. That’s like giving a kid an award for liking candy or puppies. It’s a big part of my life.”
He continued that he “firmly believes that sound risk management practices are a critical element to any entity. And I very much enjoy presenting the value of risk management to those who haven’t yet drunk the Kool-Aid, and I will continue doing that as well.”
Frederick also thanked his family, his colleagues at the B.C. government and fellow RIMS members.
In May 2011, during the RIMS Annual Conference in Vancouver, Frederick also received the Harry and Dorothy Goodell Award, recognizing an individual who has furthered the goals of the society and the risk management discipline through outstanding service and achievement.
