The Canadian Council of Insurance Regulators has revised its mission statement to reflect the fact that its role is not to create harmonized laws across Canada, but rather to serve as advisors to the policy makers in the various jurisdictions across Canada.
In its ‘Strategic Plan 2011 – 2014,’ the CCIR noted that during its strategic planning exercise it received feedback from industry members that the CCIR was failing to deliver harmonized laws across the country.
“It is true that CCIR does not do that – because it is not our role. It is beyond the mandate of most CCIR members to create or change laws in their jurisdictions,” Danielle Boulet, CCIR’s chair, wrote in the plan’s forward statement.
“As regulator’s we administer those laws and we provide advice to policy makers and present them with the facts in the marketplace. But, we are not policy makers ourselves,” she continued.
“To address this, we have revised our Mission to specifically reference with policy makers to emphasize their important role in harmonization and implementation of common solutions.”
The mission statement now reads: We work cooperatively toward development of solutions to common regulatory issues and promote harmonization in conjunction with financial services regulators, policy makers and stakeholders.
