Texting or emailing while driving is just as dangerous as drinking and driving, according to 76% of those surveyed on behalf of ICBC.
In the Ipsos Reid poll, 917 adults drivers in British Columbia were polled on their views of distracted driving.
Eighty-seven per cent of those polled believe texting or emailing while driving is one of the riskiest things we can do behind the wheel. The majority (65%) view talking on a hand-held cellphone while driving as very risky behaviour, and 50% believe it’s just as dangerous as drinking and driving.
At the same time, 16% admitted they’ve talked on a hand-held cellphone while driving over the last 12 months. And 9% confessed they’ve texted or emailed on a hand-held device while driving.
