The Allstate Corporation announced on Thursday estimated catastrophe losses for the month of June of US$346 million, pre-tax (US$225 million after-tax). Catastrophe losses occurring in June comprised 19 events at an estimated cost of US$310 million, pre-tax, plus increased reserve reestimates of prior reported catastrophe losses, the Northbrook, Ill.-based insurer said in a statement.

Cat losses can be higher in the second quarter of the year due to the number of wind and hail events, Allstate reported

The increased reserve reestimates in June primarily relate to reestimates of April and May 2015 events.

Allstate previously announced US$451 million, pre-tax (US$293 million after-tax), in estimated catastrophe losses for the months of April and May, bringing estimated cat losses for the second quarter of 2015 to US$797 million, pre-tax (US$518 million after-tax).

“Catastrophe losses can be higher in the second quarter of the year due to the number of wind and hail events,” the statement said.

In May, Allstate said that four severe weather events accounted for more than 77% of the insurer’s estimated cat losses for May. Of the estimated May cat losses, about double the normal percentage (30%) were related to auto claims from “large rain events accompanied by heavy flooding,” Allstate said at the time.

Allstate is the United States’ largest publicly held personal lines insurer, providing auto, home, life and other types of insurance through its Allstate, Esurance, Encompass and Answer Financial brand news to approximately 16 million households.
