A four-alarm fire in Toronto’s west end has caused more than $600,000, reports the Toronto Star.
It is not yet known how much of the damage is insured.
The fire occurred on the evening of May 24, severely damaging 791-797 Queen Street West. The buildings were a commercial/residential mix, with storefronts on the ground level and apartments on the second story.
Station 332 district chief James Green told the Toronto Star the fire appears to have been accidentally started on a deck of one of the apartments, before spreading to three other units.
“All four have common roof space and there was a two-foot space between the roof and ceiling rafters, so when it got inside there, it quickly spread to all four units,” Green told the paper.
The four stores below the apartment units suffered heavy water damage.
In February 2008, a six-alarm fire destroyed a block – roughly 14 or 15 buildings – along Queen Street West, just to the east of the most recent blaze.
