It is premature to conclude that all parts of the world have experienced peak transmission of the H1N1 pandemic influenza, according to an emergency committee that advises the World Health Organization.
Furthermore, additional time and information is needed to provide expert advice on the status of the pandemic.
It was suggested that the committee reconvene to review intervening developments and related epidemiological information.
There is mixed evidence showing declining or low pandemic activity in many countries, but West Africa is seeing new community level transmission activity, the committee reported to WHO.
As the winter months have not yet started in the southern hemisphere, the committee was uncertain about whether additional generalized waves of H1N1 activity might occur. The committee did suggest the need to maintain vigilance and not to undermine preparations for dealing with the flu.
The WHO recommends that:
• governments should not close borders or restrict international traffic and trade;
• governments should maintain surveillance of unusual flu-like illness and severe pneumonia; and
• individuals should delay travel if ill.
