Hamilton, Ontario saw a 39% increase in claims stemming from property damage or transit-related injuries between 2008 and 2009, reported The Hamilton Spectator.
Of the 3,202 claims received in 2009, 1,453 were flood claims, arising largely from the July 26, 2009 floods.
Sewer backups accounted for the most liability claims, but were not the most severe. Sewer backup claims averaged $160 each, while the 127 pothole claims in 2009 averaged $1,092 each. In addition, $12,987 was paid out on average for 59 sidewalk-tripping claims, reported the Spectator.
Transit claims cost the city $1.24 million, with the majority coming from 95 public transit passenger injury claims. An average of $13,906 was spent per claim.
