Hurricane Ida is losing momentum as it heads towards the Gulf Coast, with hurricane warnings for U.S. gulf coast states being changed to tropical storm warnings.
The National Hurricane Center issued an advisory on Nov. 6 indicating that Ida had reached hurricane intensity. By Nov. 7, winds were 165 km-h and Ida was upgraded to a Category 2 hurricane, according to the NHC.
But as of Nov. 9, hurricane warnings and watches previously issued for the Gulf Coast by the NHC have been discontinued.
A tropical storm warning is in effect from Grand Isle, Louisiana eastward to the Aucilla River, Florida, including New Orleans and lake Pontchartrain.
Tropical storm conditions are expected in the warning area within 24 hours, the NHC reports.
Thus far, only one named hurricane, Claudine, has made landfall in the United States.
Hurricane Ida is the first storm of the season to affect oil and gas facilities in the Gulf, according to Bloomberg.com.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
