Hurricane Katia is tracking to bypass Canadian land, but it is expected to kick up waves of up to 15 feet high along the south-facing coastlines of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, the Canadian Hurricane Centre reports.
“Most computer models are indicating that the intensity of this hurricane is likely to stay at Category 1 over the next two days as it continues to track north today, then take a north-eastward turn tomorrow,” the CHC says in a statement on its Web site.
The hurricane centre reports that neither wind nor rain from Katia is expected over Canadian land areas, although Canadian marine territory will be affected.
“The primary impact of this storm for land territory will be the south-facing coastlines of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland with large swells crashing onshore.
“We have already seen large waves along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia and they will build further on Friday [Sept. 9]. Waves could be breaking at heights near five metres (about 15 feet) by late Friday.
“Similar waves can be expected in Southern Newfoundland on Saturday [Sept. 10].”
