The web site through which Canadian p&c insurers will be able to share information on suspicious claims is now operational.
The Insurance Bureau of Canada’s (IBC) “web claims submission” system has been in the pilot stage with Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company of Canada.
The bilingual system will allow insurers to input claims information to the IBC database online, allowing insurers and IBC investigators to search claims for possible indicators of fraud.
“Our analysis of data can only be as effective as the quality of data we receive,” says Terri MacLean, executive vice president of information and investigations at the IBC. “This new system is extremely important to the insurance industry because it provides us with access to timely information that can help curtail insurance crime like organized auto theft and staged accidents.”
Commenting on the pilot, Wawanesa’s Winnipeg region claims manager Barbara Raison called the system “easy to use, readily accessible and user-friendly”. “In particular, the summary report feature is a quick method to determine the status of a particular claim.”
