Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is reminding homeowners in the Maritimes to contact an insurance representative immediately if their properties or belongings suffered damage during a storm that hit the area on Oct. 5.
On Oct. 5, a ‘Nor’easter’ moved over eastern Quebec, New Brunswick, parts of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador. It brought winds of 90 km-h to 110 km-h, knocked out power in some areas, caused storm surges along coast lines and even dumped snow in the early hours of Oct. 6, reported ctv.ca
“First and foremost, people should make sure that they and their families are safe,” said Bill Adams, IBC’s vice president of the Atlantic region.
“The good news is that most homeowner and automobile policies will cover damage caused by windstorms, including things like broken windows,” an IBC release says. “Sewer backup may be covered by special policy coverage, but water damage caused by overland flooding is usually not covered by insurance.”
