The Insurance Bureau of Canada has deployed an on-site response to Saturday’s train explosion disaster in Lac-Mégantic, Que.
The IBC’s Community Assistance Mobile Pavilion provides disaster victims with insurance-related information.
Most home and auto insurance policies will cover the material damage caused by the disaster, IBC said in a release Monday afternoon.
“Our thoughts go out to the families and all who have been affected by this tragedy,” said Pierre Babinsky, manager of communications and public affairs at IBC.
“The explosions and fires caused major damage to homes and businesses in the community,” he noted. “Insurers will do everything they can to enable those affected to resume their normal activities.”

The organization also noted that many residents who lost their homes or had to evacuate can’t access their insurance policies and is encouraging policyholders to contact their brokers and insurers to validate their coverage.
IBC is also advising victims to keep all invoices and vouchers for expenses incurred as a result of the disaster.
