The Canadian Hurricane Centre (CHC) and the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) will discuss, during their June 25 workshop in Toronto, “lessons learned” from successes and failures of predicting tropical cyclones.
In addition, the outlook for the 2009 storm season will be reviewed.
The workshop, hosted by the ICLR, will feature Peter Bowyer, CHC program manager.
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Colorado State University’s Tropical Cyclone Lab and the Tropical Storm Risk Initiative in the United Kingdom all predict the level of hurricane activity in the Atlantic will be at or above normal for the 2009 hurricane season, the CHC said.
Last year, five post-tropical storms entered Canada or its waters. Cristobal tracked through the marine district south of Atlantic Canada; Hanna passed through the southern Maritimes; Ike swept through southern Ontario, Quebec and Labrador; Kyle moved through all three Maritime provinces; and Laura clipped the outer Great Banks of Newfoundland, Bowyer noted in a CHC release.
ICLR’s workshop ‘Hurricanes in Canada’ will be held on June 25, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $75 for ICLR members ($150 for non-members, if space permits).
