The grace period to install an immobilizer on vehicles considered to be most-at-risk of theft in Winnipeg has been reduced to 60 days from 90 days as of Dec. 1.
The period will be shortened a further 30 days on Jun. 1, 2011.
Those outside of Winnipeg are still provided a 90-day grace period.
Owners who register a most-at-risk vehicle for the first time in Winnipeg or a vehicle that commutes to Winnipeg must install an immobilizer.
“Unprotected most-at-risk vehicles in Winnipeg have a continued high risk of theft and these vehicles continue to be targeted by criminals,” said Manitoba’s Attorney General Andrew Swan, minister responsible for Manitoba Public Insurance.
“While we have seen significant reductions in auto theft in Winnipeg, we know there is still work to do.
“This measure is just one step we are taking to continue the fight against auto theft,” Swan said.
