In an effort to raise money for its cause, Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC) once again teamed up with ING at the ING Ottawa Marathon and collected CD$48,884.
This figure represents an increase of 141% from the amount raised last year and surpasses the teams goal of CD $30,000.
When setting the donation target for 2006 at CD$30,000, Tracy Laughlin, ING Insurance Regional vice-president of Durham Region, says they thought it was a stretch.
“I was absolutely amazed when I saw the final total raised,” Laughlin, who first initiated the Ontario-wide challenge in 2005, says. “It was really impressive to see both the team and individual contributions towards the campaign.”
Mack Rooney raised over CD$6,000 and helped his team, Toronto Region, win the challenge between ING regional offices for the second year running according to WICC. Rooney says he was able to raise such a high amount in part as a result of the support he received from the broker community.
“WICC is so grateful to all the participants who reached out to their friends, families and colleagues,” Lyna Newman, executive director of WICC and vice-president of operations and human resources for KRG Insurance Brokers, says. “100% of these pledges will directly go to worthy cancer research projects that we hope will make this dreadful disease a thing of the past.”
WICC extends a special thanks to the 12 teams and over 60 runners, and to all staff, brokers, friends and family who pledged them.
Since 2005, the WICC Challenge at the ING Ottawa Marathon has raised almost D$68,000.
