No injuries have been reported in the blaze that began about 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at the Dauphin Village Mall.

The fire is not considered suspicious and the cause is under investigation, but a witness told radio station CKDM that it started in a deep fryer in Corrina’s on Main, a popular restaurant in the mall.

Fire Chief Cam Abrey said the fire was able to spread quickly through the attic in part because a second roof had previously been put on the building to link two separate wings.

Heavy equipment had to be brought in to take that second roof down.

Also in the mall was a hair salon, along with the head office and boutique for Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival.

CTV spoke with the Ukrainian festival’s president who said the organization lost everything except for a few files.

The organization will hold an emergency meeting Thursday to decide where to relocate the office; however, the boutique will not reopen anytime soon.
