MPI tightens up driver safety program

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is tightening up its driver safety program, hoping for early intervention to change driver behavior.
Under the “Driver Improvement and Control Program”, MPI monitors driver behavior using a system of demerit points for collisions, traffic convictions, etc., much like other provinces. Additions to the system will see the public auto insurer looking more closely at the frequency and severity of such incidents to determine if early remedial action is required. The thinking is that MPI wants to step in earlier when drivers are exhibiting bad habits.
“Statistically, any driver involved in an at risk behavior – whether it is getting a speeding ticket or being involved in a collision – is at greater risk of being involved again,” says Brock MacMartin, director of the province’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing operation. “Previously, the program masked changes in driving behavior because a driver who had earned five merits over the years could be involved in at least eight two-demerit-point incidents before being identified as at risk.”
Intervention can take the form of warning letters, course requirements, or license restrictions or withdrawal.
