Is your toy motor scooter covered under your property insurance? Don’t count on it, warns the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO).
The IBAO has posted a warning on its Web site that many insurers don’t cover motorized toys under property policies.
“We have received several inquiries at the IBAO office in regard to insurance on motorized (toy) vehicles such as scooters, etc.,” the IBAO notes in an online posting. “Some of these motorized toys are electric or gas operated.
“Many of your clients may own one of these motorized (toy) vehicles and are under the impression that there is coverage under the property policy.
“As you know, these types of toys can be purchased at a supermarket or department store. However, there is NO coverage with many companies under a property policy.”
The IBAO says it is developing stickers that it will make available to its member brokers. The sticker is to be attached to a personal lines property policy.
The wording on the sticker will read as follows: “Your policy may not cover loss or damage to or caused by a motorized vehicle.”
