Lloyd Albert Hackett, a prominent member of Canada’s risk management community, passed away on Jan. 20 at the age of 80.
Hackett was appointed as the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS)’s first Canadian director of legislative, risk management and public affairs.
A long-standing member of ORIMS (Ontario Risk and Insurance Management Society), he served for many years on the chapter board and as ORIMS president in 1971-1972. He served as ORIMS legislation director and legislation committee chairman for decades.
He was the founding member of the Canadian chapters committee of RIMS and represented risk managers to the Canadian Council of Superintendents of Insurance at its annual conferences, meetings and panel discussions.
As a lifetime emeritus member of ORIMS, Hackett was awarded the Don Stuart Award (Canadian risk manager of the year) and was recognized by RIMS as recipient of the prestigious international RIMS Richard Bland Award for his outstanding lifetime contributions to the field of legislation and governmental relations.
Hackett “helped to shape legislation and helped colleagues in the industry to understand its application,” a memorial said.
“Lloyd’s exemplary contributions to risk management and the insurance industry will be long remembered. Truly a gentleman and a scholar, a wise soul and a good friend to all, he will be missed.”
Hackett was husband to his wife Marilyn for 60 years, father to his daughter Susan, as well as to his sons Dave and Larry (deceased), and grandfather to Sean.
