A Saskatchewan law enforcement traffic blitz resulted in more than 200 drivers being fined for using a cell phone while driving.
Operation HandsFree was held on Nov. 17 and 18 across Saskatchewan. Traffic enforcement officers watched for drivers talking or texting with a hand-held cell phone and raised awareness of the dangers of distracted driving, an SGI release says.
Law enforcement issued a total of 663 traffic tickets, including the 207 tickets specifically for cell phone use. The police issued fines as well for not wearing a seatbelt, tinted and obstructed windows and other forms of distracted driving.
The initiative was the first of a new province-wide, coordinated approach to traffic safety blitzes following a meeting of all traffic enforcement units in the province.
A provincial blitz will be held each month targeting a particular traffic safety issue.
