SGI Canada is cautioning Saskatchewan residents about potential water damage that could be caused by flooding due to spring thaw.
“This winter, parts of Saskatchewan have seen much higher than normal levels of snow accumulation,” said Rick Barks, SGI Canada’s assistant vice president of personal lines.
“With the coming spring thaw, your home may be at risk of meltwater entering your basement and causing damage.”
Collins Bay, Saskatchewan received 285% more precipitation than normal in February, and Key Lake saw 208% more precipitation during this period, according to the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority.
SGI suggests the following tips to reduce the risk of spring thaw problems in homes:
• shovel or remove snow from around the home’s foundation;
• ensure downspouts are extended at least two meters away from the foundation;
• ensure sump pumps are working;
• check basement regularly for signs of water; and
• install a mainline sewer backwater valve to protect against sewer backup.
