Motorcycle riders and other motorists in Saskatchewan are being reminded throughout the month of May to keep safety top of mind.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), the Saskatchewan Safety Council (SSC) and the RCMP have jointly launched an educational campaign as part of Motorcycle Safety Week, which runs from May 6 to 12.

The focus of the campaign is to educate motorcyclists about wearing proper safety gear and, for motorists, how to share the road with these smaller vehicles.

“Motorcycles are smaller and more difficult to see, but still require the same amount of space that a car or truck does,” emphasizes Andrew Cartmell, president and CEO of SGI.

Last year, 287 collisions involved motorcycles in Saskatchewan, resulting in 203 injuries and four fatalities.

SGI has been partnering with the Saskatchewan Sport Bike Association (SSBA) to identify how to reduce the human toll and motorcycle claim costs.

“Gear can save lives,” says SSBA representative Cody Jordison. The use of boots, gloves, helmets and full pants is an important message that needs to be sent and re-emphasized to the riding community across the province, he says.
