Maurice (Hank) Greenberg, the former chief executive of American International Group Inc., will not face criminal charges from New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, according to a recent statement from Spitzer’s office.
In April Spitzer publicly announced on ABC news that his office might pursue criminal charges against Greenberg. Spitzer’s recent decision however not to press criminal charges has eliminated a possible complication in defending the civil suit against the former Marsh CEO as the decision will likely make it easier for Greenberg to defend his civil case.
If the case is handled on civil grounds, Greenberg’s lawyers will not have to determine if it is safe to respond to the civil case. A civil court response could be used against Greenberg in a future criminal prosecution.
A federal criminal case may still be pursued against Greenberg.
