An east-west band of Edmonton was particularly hard hit by a severe thunderstorm in the early hours of July 12, 2012, resulting in some roadways being flooded and the temporary closing of a recreational centre.

With the exception of the arena space, Mill Woods Recreation Centre will remain closed until at least July 16, 2012, notes a press release from the City of Edmonton. This will allow municipal staff time to assess damage to the facility, as well as to electrical and pumping systems for the pool.

Power had to be shut off so that centre staff could safely access the basement, which was flooded with approximately five feet of water.

Edmonton emergency personnel were called to more than 40 incidents, including to douse two fires started by lightning, respond to four calls related to flooding and electrical hazards, and rescue about 20 drivers and passengers from vehicles on the flooded Whitemud Freeway.

The city reports an east-west band mainly south of the Whitemud Freeway to 23 Avenue was hardest hit by the storm. Municipal drainage services staff were expected to follow up on basement flooding reports as soon as possible to assess any drainage system issues.

Homeowners are advised to contact their respective insurance companies for advice on clean-up and claims procedures. Homeowners are also encouraged to report flooded basements to see if they qualify for a subsidy toward the installation of backflow valves to prevent future flooding.
