Tropical Storm Bonnie is churning towards the Gulf of Mexico, putting the clean-up efforts of the BP oil spill on hold.
Bonnie is the second named storm of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane season. The storm system will make its way over southern Florida on July 23, and then across the Gulf of Mexico, into the area affected by the spill, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Maximum sustained winds remain near 65 km-h, with no significant change in strength expected before it moves over south Florida.
“However, some slight strengthening is possible when the cyclone moves over the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday.”
The BBC has reported that while crews on the ships at the site of the spill are preparing to leave, the well will remain capped while the site is evacuated.
A “packer,” a plug used during storms, has also been placed in the relief well to stabilise it as Bonnie passes over it.
