Truckers driving hours investigated in RCMP officers death

The recent accident which left an RCMP officer dead after a truck driver hit his parked cruiser; has raised concerns regarding the amount of time truckers are behind the wheel and the number of trips they take without hiatus.
Preliminary investigations will examine how many trips the truck driver made on the day of the accident. Investigations will also look into the number of hours the trucker drove before the collision. In addition, safety records held by the trucking company will be ceased for review and a mechanical inspection of the transport truck will be conducted.
Provincial regulations dictate that drivers can drive for a maximum of 13 hours after being off-duty for eight consecutive hours. However, they are not required to keep logs as long as they are not travelling outside a 160-kilometre radius of their base of operation.
