The Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) immobilizer program is expanding to include an additional 50,000 most-at-risk vehicles.
The expansion, effective Oct. 1, will require the installation of approved, aftermarket immobilizers prior to the renewal of Autopac policies, MPI notes in a release.
These additional 50,000 vehicles join the 50,000 vehicles that were already on the original list introduced on Sept. 1, 2007.
“The immobilizer program has had a major impact on auto theft in Winnipeg,” Marilyn McLaren, president and CEO of MPI, said in the release. “When we started this program, the vehicles on the list represented just 5% of the vehicles on the road but accounted for 50% of the thefts and only 24% of them were protected with immobilizers. Today over 97% of the first Most-at-Risk group registered in Winnipeg are protected.”
The list of vehicles is available at www.mpi.mb.ca
