The Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) is reminding consumers that if thieves break into a vehicle and steal some of its contents, two insurance claims will need to be filed.
The auto policy covers damage to the vehicle, while the homeowners or tenants policy will cover any lost possessions that were in the car.
During the holiday season, thieves tend to wait around parking lots for unsuspecting shoppers who drop bags off in their car before going back in for more shopping, the IBAO warns.
Consumers should therefore resist the temptation to leave Christmas shopping items in a vehicle in plain view of others. They should also try to park in well-lit parking areas.

Carstar Collision Centres is holding its first-ever, “Hit Us With Your Best Shot” photo contest to raise money for cystic fibrosis.
To enter, upload a photo of your best ‘game face’ to www.carstar.ca.
For each of the first 1,000 photos taken, Carstar will donate Cdn$5 to cystic fibrosis.
The Grand Prize winner will win Cdn$10,000 and see their photo appear during one of Carstar’s pre-show advertising spots on the television program ‘The Big Game,’ airing Feb. 1, 2009 on CTV.
There is also a chance to win Cdn$500. The contest closes Jan. 18, 2009.
