WHO pushes international sharing of H5N1 vaccines

In an attempt to better prepare all countries in the case of an influenza pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reached an agreement that encourages international cooperation to ensure equal access to H5N1 vaccines and other pandemic vaccines.
The World Health Assembly (WHA) wrapped up its sixtieth session yesterday, after adopting the resolution, Sharing of Influenza viruses and access to vaccines and other benefits, which notes the need to share when it comes to influenza, both in terms of preparedness and international cooperation to provide equal access to H5N1 vaccines and other pandemic vaccines.
All countries need to be aware of their obligations under the revised International Health Regulations. When collective security is at stake, public opinion can carry great weight, Dr. Margaret Chan, director-general, said in her closing remarks at the WHA session. After very considerable discussion, you have adopted a resolution on the sharing of influenza viruses and access to pandemic vaccines and other benefits, she said.
I want to underscore the importance of this decision. My responsibilities for implementing the IHR [International Health Regulations] depend on this sharing.
According to the resolution, the WHO will be required to establish a stockpile of vaccines for influenza vaccines, including H5N1, in addition to determining guidelines which would ensure the fair and equal distribution of the vaccines at prices countries can afford.
