Global warming is undoubtedly occurring, with the last decade being the warmest in history, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
In its report, State of the Climate, more than 300 scientists from around the world, including Canada, examined 10 climate change indicators in 48 countries. By comparing the data decade-by-decade, scientists were able to determine that the earth has been getting progressively warmer.
Indicators included air temperature over land, sea-surface temperature, air temperature over oceans, sea level, ocean heat, humidity, troposphere temperature, Arctic sea ice, glaciers and spring snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere.
All indicators exhibited signs of a warming trend.
“Global average surface temperatures during the last three decades have been progressively warmer than all earlier decades, making 2000-09 the warmest decade in the instrumental record,” the report says.
“The conclusion is unmistakeable – yes, the planet is warming,” Derek Arndt, the report’s co-editor, told the Globe and Mail.
