Faulty extension cords and bad blockheater plugs spark vehicular fires: MPI

Faulty extension cord or corroded block heater plugs are the culprit for several dozen vehicle fires each winter in Manitoba, according to Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) fire experts.
A cracked extension cord or a block heater with a corroded plug can result in “electrical arching,” which can quickly spark a fire.
About 1,000 vehicles are damaged by fire each year in Manitoba. Several dozen of these fires are the direct result of damaged extension cords or worn block heater/in-car heater plugs. The majority of these fires take place in winter, an MPI release says.
During bitterly cold winter temperatures, Manitobans will plug in their vehicles to heat various engine fluids (anti-freeze/oil), allowing for easier starting. Extension cords that are cracked or have exposed wires should be replaced.
