Southern New Brunswick was hit by heavy rainfall on Oct. 20, with Environment Canada estimating that precipitation in some regions could exceed 70 mm.

“These conditions could lead to localized flooding, particularly where normal drainage systems are overwhelmed,” noted a weather warning from the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization. “Areas of poor drainage may sustain standing water, and minor flooding of basements may occur. People living or working along streams, tributaries and small rivers in the southern half of the province are asked to be on alert,” the alert added.

Homeowners were advised to remove debris and leaves from rain gutters, culverts and ditches to ensure they drain freely. In addition, it was suggested that people with boats, recreational furniture and equipment should move them to higher ground.

Amateur video posted to the website for The Weather Network showed images of flooded streets, full ditches and fast-flowing streams and rivers.

As of 6:32 am on Oct. 22, Environment Canada’s forecast for several areas of the province – including Fredericton, Oromocto and Sussex – was mainly cloudy with a 60% chance of showers and winds gusting to 40 km/h.
