The Manitoba government has pledged $100,000 of provincial support  to the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) in response to  flooding in the southern Philippines caused by typhoon Bopha.

The natural disaster is reported to have killed more than 600 people, and left hundreds more missing and an estimated 400,000 homeless.

The MCIC is an independent coalition of development organizations that oversees the distribution of development dollars.

“When natural disasters strike, MCIC has proven effective at getting relief to the families that need it most as quickly as possible,” Premier Greg Selinger noted in a government statement.

“With this contribution, the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation will work with its member organizations to ensure assistance is distributed where it will provide the most benefit.”
