Ontario minister of finance Dwight Duncan stated in a June 4 Ontario Legislature session that he anticipates responding to the recommendations set out in the Ontario insurance regulator’s five-year auto review by the third or fourth week of June.
“We are assessing the responses we’ve had from the public on a range of issues, and I as indicated to the member here in the House last week, I anticipate responding likely in the next two to three weeks,” he noted, according to a Hansard transcript of the session.
Duncan was responding to a question from NDP MPP for Beaches-East York Michael Prue about one of 39 recommendations made by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO).
Prue objected to Recommendation 22, which proposes to reduce the cap for medical and rehabilitation benefits for non-catastrophic claims from $100,000 to $25,000.
According to Prue, “this recommendation would impoverish accident victims, leave taxpayers on the hook for health care costs and further enrich the insurance companies.”
Prue asked the Minister to reject this recommendation, noting that health care professionals have been in touch expressing fears over the proposed cutback.
Duncan replied that the McGuinty government “is looking out for the interests of the auto insurance consumers and those who have access to benefits in the unfortunate circumstances they find themselves.”
