A survey by Swinton Vans indicates van drivers in the United Kingdom are having second thoughts about relying on their satellite navigation (sat nav) systems, with one in five respondents opting to get from A to B on their own.

In a survey of 1,000 van drivers, about a fifth of respondents reported they would prefer to use their own navigational skills to get to a destination, while a third have been delivered to the wrong destination by their sat navs.

Phil Moss, commercial vehicle manager at Swinton Van Insurance, says that some drivers may trust their own skills more, perhaps because they know shortcuts for which their device has not been programmed. “It is also important to remember to update your sat nav regularly, ensuring that any new roads, speed cameras or closures are included,” Moss says.

“The impact on a business should a sat nav go wrong, can manifest itself in a number of ways – damaging customer relations as well as having financial implications should it interfere with trading,” he adds.
