Ontario drivers have improved slightly, based on a 2.2% decrease in the frequency of collisions between 2009 and 2010, according to Allstate Insurance Company of Canada’s Ontario Safe Driving Study.
The study ranks the driving safety of communities and regions by analyzing car collision frequency. Using Allstate Canada data from 2007 to 2010, the study identifies the safest Ontario communities in which to drive.
Belleville topped the list of Ontario’s safest drivers, with 2.8 collision claims per 100 cars. Brampton was at the other end of the spectrum, with 6.10 collision claims per 100 cars.
Between 2006 and 2009, and between 2007 and 2010, St. Thomas (33.8%); Bradford (25.6%); and North Bay (10.4%) had the largest increase in collision claims rates.
Communities with the largest decrease in collision claims rates during the same periods were Guelph (19.4% reduction); Georgetown (12.4% reduction); and Innisfil (10.8% reduction).
Broken down by region, the Greater Toronto Area (including Metro Toronto) had the highest claims frequency rate, with 5.4 collision claims per 100 cars. Northern Ontario had the lowest claims frequency rate, with 3.4 collision claims per 100 cars.
