A possible F3 tornado touched down just outside of Raymore, Saskatchewan on July 3, reports Environment Canada.
Raymore is southeast of Saskatoon.
Initial assessments from photos and videos of the damage suggest the tornado was a strong F2 or a weak F3, an Environment Canada release says.
The majority of the damage reported occurred on the Kawacatoose First Nation Reserve, reports the Canadian Press. Thirteen homes and four farms have reportedly been destroyed.
“Right now we’re saying, as a preliminary rating, we’re ranking this tornado as an F3,” Dave Carlsen, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada told the Canadian Press.
“In terms of wind speed estimates, that correlates to somewhere between 250 to 330 kilometres per hour.”
Carlsen noted that a steel ‘quonset’ hut was apparently ripped off of its foundation; in addition, that part of the foundation was taken out of the ground during the storm.
The degree of damage observed can be associated with even more powerful winds, but Carlsen told Canadian Press that Environment Canada researchers were allowing for the fact that the area has been subjected to heavy rains recently, potentially weakening the structure’s foundation.
“Of all tornadoes out there, maybe 5% or fewer are F3s or higher, so we’re looking at a fairly rare event.”
