The Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) is reminding brokers that the name or identity they use to market themselves or their business on social media sites must match the registered name of the individual broker or the business being marketed.
In its Fall 2011 newsletter, RIBO noted an increase in the use of social media in the broker community for advertising or networking purposes.
It pointed to Ontario Regulation 991, Section 15(1)(6), which stipulates that an individual, business or partnership holding oneself out, advertising or carrying on business, must do so under the name the registered name of the individual, partnership or business that the individual is representing.
“Please ensure that the name/identity used within any social media complies with this section as the use of any other name would be an act of misconduct,” the RIBO bulletin says.
